Instead, it grows on slender stems called ramicauls, each topped with a single, leathery, spoon-shaped leaf. The flowers are correspondingly tiny—usually less than 1 cm—but are produced in abundance on thin, wiry racemes that rise above the foliage. The translucent yellow or cream flowers are delicately "painted" with reddish-purple or maroon stripes and spots.
